Rainbow Rug

Image
Sometimes we get caught up in color. What matches with what, what should go where to accentuate this or that. But sometimes...sometimes we don't just need a matching color. Sometimes we need more than a little color as an accessory. Sometimes we need all  the colors, just because. And in those times I say thank God for the rainbow, and for how easily and affordably this bright reminder can be integrated into anyone's household. The rainbow speaks to all of us, people, so if you haven't embraced it already...now's the time! Don't just bring a little color into your life...bring them all! Since I had all the colors of the rainbow with the awesome Tulip one-step dyes, I thought I would make a colorful rug for the entrance of my studio.  First, I started out with a plain white rug, then watch what happens! The original rug from Ross- $25.00 Squirt yellow dye in the center and rub the dye into the fibers. The pill is high so it took a little rubbing. ...

Color Drip Lampshade

The fun thing about tie dying is the flowing rivers of color that is part of the process.  Sometimes, I feel it's a shame to let all the beautiful excess of dye go down the drain but here is a project that is a by-product of dyeing- waste not want not!  All you need is a bunch of plain white 1-ply paper towels, no prints or it'll be too busy.   I didn't need this lamp anywhere in the house, need to get rid of things actually, but couldn't resist this little milk glass beauty at Goodwill.   I covered the outside of this plain white shade to give it a little contrast.  Remember, with lampshades, there is a heat element, so you don't want to actually decoupage on the inside of the shade where it gets hot. The original milk glass lamp from Goodwill $5.99 Paper towels used to catch the drips of drying dye projects, Mod Podge, and a 1 inch foam brush.  If you aren't dying anything, food coloring should have the same dying effect on the paper towels... ...

The Marie Show

My favorite thing about being a crafter is sharing crafts with the world.  Don't get me wrong, I love just making things too, and admiring them, but sharing and inspiring others to create something of their own is so rewarding (I come from a long line of teachers/tinkers).  Being on T.V. is the best because you reach so many people all over the country.  I've been so fortunate to have had the pleasure and honor of being the craft expert on the Marie Osmond Show on the Hallmark Channel  this past year.  Production is wrapping at the end of the month so I'm feeling a bit sentimental about having had the good luck of being a part of such a remarkable team.  I've put some of my most beloved appearances on a Youtube Channel to share them with friends who don't get the channel or are out of the country.  Click below: The makeup/hair/styling team.   Mowhawk Makeup  is the girl.  She is a magician. Color Your Covers!

Image
Rainbows everywhere!  O, how I love color!  I was going to just keep it simple and go blue and white stripes but I couldn't help myself and used, well, all the colors (except orange). This is a great way to instantly make your covers a giant fun rainbow for a kids room or if you just love color like me.  It takes two packets of each color- yellow, green, blue (2 different blues), purple, and red to cover a queen/full bedspread and two pillow cases.  You'll also need a car-wash sponge to spread the dye evenly.  I also used some spray dyes to add rings to the pillow cases.  Wash the duvet first to get the sizing off and make sure to use 100% cotton for the most vibrant color possible.  I got this queen duvet here at Target  for $45.00.  The dyes I used were Tulip one step dyes  available at craft stores everywhere. 1.  Make a yellow dye bath and dip dye one end of the duvet in.   1a.  Let soak for a coupl...

Sisterhood of the Velvety Pants

Image
Clothing makeover goddess Marisa Lynch and I had another crafty play date and I finally decided to reinvent my circa 1995 velvet striped pants I've had since, well, before anyone I knew had a cell phone. I've had so much trouble letting go of them because I love the way they feel- the fabric is luxurious and awesome and really amazingly soft and silky.  They are Miss Sixty brand, which, we all know makes timeless, yet time travel-able basics.  Yet I never wear them because they are just TOO MUCH going on.  If they were a circus tent I would move into that tent...  Anyway, not quite ready to toss this awesome material just yet. A chair would also look great upholstered in this fabric, but, there isn't enough for that so we put our reinvention caps on and...  BEFORE (notice the Christmas tree in the background, It was March friends.  Yes, I am that lady.) …and the amazing up close and personal shot of the velvety material.
